  2. Female-Centric Lifting Resources

    I second everything Amy just said. It's a great program for someone just getting started and I highly recommend it. As I progressed, and got more interested in building strength for the long haul, I moved to a program that focused more on the "core" lifts (squat, deadlift, press) and lifting heavy. It's a good way to get the terminology and basic mechanics of lifting down, and building that beginning strength that you can move up from, if that makes sense.
  3. Okay - woman AND 40+ chiming in here. 2 second background - started NROLFW last June, Starting Strength on Jan 2, and AFP on March 19. On SS, I started to stress out about squatting 3x week and DL 2x week (despite my love for the DL!). It was a big relief for me both mentally and physically to focus on only 2 lifts per session, and since I have limited time to work out, now have the time to work on chins and pushups, which are a goal of mine. In the brief time I've been running AFP, I've seen strength increases (if not necessarily by weight number, by feel) in Bench and DL. I'm having trouble now with squats however, so I'm going to give increased volume a try - back off the weight a bit and work on mechanics. As a newbie, in my limited experience and humble opinion, this has been a great program thus far and I intend to continue, though I may adjust rate of weight progression to 1x week or further out as I begin to stall again (this will be the 3rd or 4th time stalling since starting SS in January) Thanks so much for coming up with it - it's helped make this weightlifting thing less of a lark and more of a lifetime pursuit!

    a question about finding my starting E1RM: for example, my Bench PR is 75 lbs for 3 sets of 5 reps. Based on the chart, would that mean my E1RM is about 85lbs? Do I start there, or move up a row, because I've essentially already achieved that 1RM by pressing 75 for 5? Thanks so much for your help.

  8. Hey Adam - just wanted to let you know I started your AFP about 3 weeks ago and I'm really enjoying it. I love not squatting on DL days and am completely in love with DL triples. Plus I get to work on chinups and pushups which I felt I didn't really have room for when I was doing Starting Strength. Thanks so much!

    Desk job at an outpatient mental health clinic, doing data analysis and other computer-related work. Also mom to a 10-yr old and 17-yr old and all THAT entails. I get up at 5am to get in my gym time, otherwise it will not happen. Working out keeps me sane. My job doesn't help my workouts in that I'm sitting all the time, so I have cursed myself with tight hip flexors, and I'm very bad about doing mobility stuff throughout the day, no matter how minor
